Associate of Applied Science in Computer Information Systems – Networking Concentration

The Associate of Applied Science in Computer Information Systems – Networking Concentration Program provides foundational skills required to install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain network systems in business environments. Major topics covered include hardware technologies, operating systems, networking, routing, security, and database management. This program prepares students for careers in a variety of positions including Information Security Technician, LAN Administrator, Junior Network Administrator, Technical Support Specialist, PC Technician and IT Support Team Lead.

As an Applied Science degree, 75% of the program is dedicated to technical classes with only 25% focusing on General Education. With a more concentrated focus on these subjects, the student is more likely to succeed in a career in Information Technology when compared to Associate of Science degree which may require up to 50% to be dedicated to General Education.

Prerequisites:

Must be a High School Graduate or have a GED, be able to use a keyboard, mouse, and the windows operating system. New Dell or equivalent laptop computer included for new students. Laptop offer valid June 1, 2015-September 30, 2015. Restrictions apply. Ask for details.

Upon completion of the Associate of Applied Science in Computer Information Systems – Networking Concentration Program, the graduate as a Security Technician, LAN Administrator, Junior Network Administrator, Technical Support Specialist, PC Technician and IT Support Team Lead will be able to:

  • Discuss computer operating systems and hardware fundamentals Perform essential steps in PC installation, configuration, troubleshooting and repair
  • Install, Configure and troubleshoot basic networking hardware, protocols and services
  • Discuss network infrastructure, cryptography, assessments and audits within networks and networking environments
  • Perform installation, configuration and troubleshooting of various operating systems and network operating systems
  • Develop a positive social attitude to enhance positive and professional relationships with coworkers and supervisors within a diverse organization
  • Develop analytical, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills applicable to real-world problems.

Outlook

According to the U.S. Department of Labor statistics, employment of computer systems is expected to grow by 20 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. Demand for these workers will increase as organizations continue to adopt and integrate increasingly sophisticated technologies and as the need for information security grows.

Salary

The average wages of networking systems personnel were $81,000 in 2014.

This institution is approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education to offer degree programs. To continue to offer degree programs, this institution must meet the following requirements:

  1. Become institutionally accredited by accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education, with the scope of the accreditation covering at least one degree program.
  2. Achieve accreditation candidacy or pre-accreditation, as defined in regulations, by July 1, 2017, and full accreditation by July 1, 2020.

If this institution stops pursuing accreditation, it must:

  1. Stop all enrollment in its degree, programs, and
    Provide a teach-out to finish the educational program or provide a refund.
  2. An institution that fails to comply with accreditation requirements by the required dates shall have its approval to offer degree programs automatically suspended.

The Certificate in Computer Information Systems – Networking Concentration program provides the foundational skills required to install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain network systems in business environments. Major topics covered include hardware technologies, operating systems, networking, routing, security, and database management. This program prepares students for careers in a variety of positions including Information Security Technician, LAN Administrator, Junior Network Administrator, Technical Support Specialist, and PC Technician.

Many of the skills and competencies that will be acquired in the program can be applied to the CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Cisco CCNA, Microsoft MCSA, MCSE, Fiber Optic, and other certifications. Certification exams are optional.

Upon completion of the Associate of Science in Computer Information Systems – Networking Concentration Program, the graduate as Information Security Technician, LAN Administrator, Junior Network Administrator, Technical Support Specialist, and PC Technician will be able to:

Outlook

Employment of network and computer systems administrators is projected to grow 8 percent from 2014 to 2024, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Demand for information technology workers is high and should continue to grow as firms invest in newer, faster technology and mobile networks.

The median annual wage for network and computer systems administrators was $75,790 in May 2014.

Certificate as Cisco Certified Network Associate  (CCNA)

Program Length: This program normally takes 6-10 months to complete depending on the frequency of attendance. 18 weeks full-time, 36 weeks part-time.

Program Hours: 135 Hours

Successful graduates will be fully prepared and qualified for entry level positions as network administrators for Cisco network systems. In addition to preparing the student for the vendor neutral CompTIA Network+ certification, this program prepares the student to achieve the Cisco Certified Network Associate certification by successfully passing the following Cisco certification exams:

  • Cisco Configuration, ICND1
  • Cisco Configuration, ICND2

Prerequisites:

You must be a high school graduate or GED and be able to navigate within a Microsoft Windows environment using a mouse and keyboard.

Upon completion of the Certificate in Cisco Network Professional-Security Specialist program, the graduate will be able to:

  • Describe fundamentals and theory of computer networking systems and how they are applied in various business situations.
  • Install medium-size Cisco routed and switched networks.
  • Configure medium-size Cisco routed and switched networks.
  • Operate medium-size Cisco routed and switched networks.
  • Troubleshoot medium-size Cisco routed and switched networks.
  • Implement and verify connections to remote sites in a WAN.

Outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment opportunities for networking computer systems administrators are expected to increase 8% from 2014-2024 (www.bls.gov). Part of this growth is due to the increasing use of the Internet and network technologies within the workplace. In addition, companies are expected to be upgrading their current technology to make it faster. The healthcare and computer systems design industries are particularly expected to demand these professionals.

Salary

In May 2014, the BLS reported a median yearly salary of $75,790 for network and computer system administrators. Computer system design firms; management of companies and enterprises; employment services; colleges, universities and professional schools; and elementary and secondary schools held the highest employment levels of these professionals with annual mean salaries ranging from $65,280-$84,280. California, Texas, New York, Virginia and Florida had the highest levels of employment for network and computer system administrators. The BLS reported that the annual mean salaries for these states ranged from $79,970-$89,930.

Additionally, PayScale.com reported in December 2015 that most network administrators with CCNA certification earned between $40,160 and $78,255. Systems administrators with the certification earned between $42,136 and $81,303. While network engineers with CCNA certification earned between $46,872 and $94,904, certified senior network engineers made $69,342-$121,842.
